Prep: 15 min
2 servings
Easy

Spiced Buttermilk, popularly known as 'Masala Chaas' in South India, is a refreshing and cooling beverage that has been cherished for centuries across households. This probiotic-rich drink is a staple during the sweltering Indian summers, especially in states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Traditionally churned from homemade dahi (curd), Spiced Buttermilk is infused with aromatic spices such as jeera (cumin), hing (asafoetida), and fresh herbs like curry leaves and coriander, creating a unique balance of flavors and digestive benefits. It is commonly consumed during lunch or as a mid-morning refresher, especially on festival days like Ugadi and Pongal, when the focus is on light, satvik (pure) foods. This healthy beverage not only quenches thirst but also soothes the digestive tract, making it a popular accompaniment to spicy meals. Its light, tangy, and mildly spicy taste profile appeals to all age groups, and the recipe can be easily tweaked to suit dietary preferences. Whether you’re looking to cool down after a hearty meal or searching for a nutritious way to stay hydrated, Spiced Buttermilk is a wholesome addition to your daily routine. By using low-fat curd and minimal oil for tempering, this version remains authentic yet suitable for calorie-conscious individuals. Enjoyed during festivals, family gatherings, or as a daily staple, Masala Chaas embodies the spirit of South Indian hospitality and wellness.
