How to Make Potato Chips (Traditional & Healthy Version)
Potato Chips, or 'Aloo Chips', are a beloved Indian snack enjoyed across the country, especially during festive times like Diwali, Holi, and family gatherings. Traditionally, these crispy delights are made by thinly slicing potatoes ('aloo') and deep-frying them until golden brown. However, our healthy version maintains the irresistible crunch and flavor with a fraction of the oil, making it perfect for calorie-conscious snackers. The taste is lightly spiced with classic Indian seasonings like kala namak and red chilli powder, giving a familiar, homestyle twist to this ever-popular treat. Potato Chips have a special place in Indian culinary culture, often served as an accompaniment during tea time ('chai'), picnics, and as a festive munchie. With the rise of health awareness, many families now prefer baking or air-frying to reduce oil intake while relishing the same traditional taste. This homemade recipe allows you to control the quality of ingredients, avoid preservatives, and create a nutritious snack suitable for all ages. Enjoy the authentic taste of India with these crisp, flavorful chips!
Ingredients(for 1 small bowl (approx. 30g) per person)
- 2 medium Potatoes (aloo) (preferably old potatoes for crispiness)
- 1/2 tsp Salt (sendha namak for vrat, kala namak for flavor)
- 1/4 tsp Red chilli powder (lal mirch)
- 1/4 tsp Black pepper powder (kali mirch)
- 1/2 tsp Chaat masala (for tangy flavor)
- 1 tbsp Oil (cold-pressed mustard or sunflower oil)
- 1/8 tsp Turmeric powder (haldi, optional for color) - optional
- 1/2 tsp Lemon juice (nimbu ras, optional) - optional
- 5-6 Curry leaves (kadi patta, optional for South Indian flavor) - optional
Instructions
- 1
Wash and peel the potatoes. Slice them as thinly as possible using a sharp knife or mandoline slicer. Rinse the slices in cold water to remove excess starch.
5 minutes
Thinner slices yield crispier chips; soak in water for extra crunch.
- 2
Pat the potato slices dry thoroughly using a clean kitchen towel or tissue. Ensure no moisture remains for better crisping.
3 minutes
Remove all water to prevent soggy chips.
- 3
In a large bowl, toss the potato slices with salt, red chilli powder, black pepper, chaat masala, turmeric (if using), and oil. Mix well to coat evenly.
3 minutes
Toss gently to avoid breaking the slices.
- 4
Arrange the seasoned potato slices in a single layer on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
2 minutes
Do not overlap slices; this ensures even baking.
