How to Make Walnut Chikki (Traditional & Healthy Version)
Walnut Chikki is a delightful Indian sweet snack that combines the natural crunch of akhrot (walnuts) with the earthy sweetness of gur (jaggery). This nutrient-rich treat has its roots in Indian households, especially during the winter months and around festivals like Makar Sankranti and Lohri, when chikki in various forms is commonly prepared. Unlike the classic peanut chikki or til (sesame) chikki, Walnut Chikki offers a unique taste and texture, making it an excellent option for those seeking a modern twist on a beloved traditional mithai. Walnut Chikki is not just a festive indulgence but also a smart choice for health-conscious individuals. The combination of protein-rich walnuts and mineral-dense jaggery creates a wholesome snack that curbs sweet cravings without the guilt. Its naturally sweet and nutty flavor profile appeals to both kids and adults, and it fits seamlessly into a vegetarian Indian diet. Whether packed in a dabba for lunch, served as a post-meal dessert, or enjoyed with chai, this chikki brings warmth and nostalgia to every bite.
Ingredients(for 2 medium squares (about 40g total))
- 1 cup Walnuts (Akhrot) (roughly chopped)
- 3/4 cup Jaggery (Gur) (crushed or grated)
- 1 tsp Ghee (clarified butter)
- 1/4 tsp Cardamom powder (Elaichi) (freshly ground) - optional
- a pinch Rock salt (Sendha namak) - optional
- 1 tbsp Sesame seeds (Til) (toasted) - optional
- 2 tbsp Water
- 1 tsp Sunflower oil (for greasing)
Instructions
- 1
Dry roast the chopped walnuts on a tawa or heavy pan over low flame for 2-3 minutes until aromatic. Remove and keep aside.
3 minutes
Do not over-roast the walnuts to maintain their crunch and natural oils.
- 2
In the same pan, add ghee and grated jaggery. Pour in 2 tbsp water. Cook on low-medium flame, stirring continuously, until the jaggery melts and forms a thick syrup (soft ball stage).
5 minutes
To check the syrup, drop a little in cold water; it should form a soft ball.
- 3
Add the cardamom powder, rock salt, and toasted sesame seeds to the jaggery syrup. Mix well.
2 minutes
Adding cardamom enhances fragrance, while rock salt balances sweetness.
- 4
Add the roasted walnuts to the syrup. Quickly mix so all pieces are coated evenly.
1 minute
Act fast; jaggery syrup sets quickly after mixing with nuts.
