Masala Popcorn is a vibrant Indian twist on the classic popcorn, infused with aromatic spices and flavors that reflect the diversity of Indian cuisine. Popular as a light lunch or snack, especially during festivals like Diwali and Holi, Masala Popcorn is loved for its quick preparation and bold taste. In India, street vendors often serve this spicy popcorn, blending local masalas to create a snack that’s both satisfying and packed with character. The dish's origins are rooted in the Indian tradition of elevating everyday ingredients using indigenous spices such as garam masala, hing (asafoetida), and chaat masala. The taste profile of Masala Popcorn is a delightful combination of tangy, spicy, and savory notes, making it perfect for those who crave flavorful foods without compromising on health. It's a popular choice among families during movie nights, festival gatherings, and as a mid-day lunch treat, thanks to its ease of preparation and nutritious value. Its adaptability allows for regional tweaks, with South Indian versions using curry leaves and North Indian versions leaning into chaat masala. Whether served in katoris (bowls) during a family get-together or packed in tiffin boxes for school lunches, Masala Popcorn stands out as a contemporary yet deeply Indian recipe.

  • 1/2 cup Uncooked popcorn kernels (makka ke dane)
  • 2 teaspoons Olive oil (can use mustard oil (sarson ka tel))
  • 1 teaspoon Chaat masala (for tangy flavor)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Red chilli powder (lal mirch)

  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt (namak)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin powder (jeera powder)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black pepper powder (kali mirch) - optional
  • a pinch Hing (asafoetida) (for digestive benefits) - optional
  • 1 tablespoon, finely chopped Fresh coriander (dhaniya)

Instructions

  1. 1

Heat a heavy-bottomed kadai or deep pan on medium flame. Add olive oil and let it warm up.

    2 minutes

Use a lid to prevent popcorn from spilling.

  2. 2

Add uncooked popcorn kernels (makka ke dane) to the pan. Cover with a lid and let them pop, shaking occasionally for even popping.

    8 minutes

Ensure all kernels are coated with oil for uniform popping.

  3. 3

Once popping slows, remove from heat. Transfer popped popcorn to a large mixing bowl for seasoning.

    2 minutes

Do not keep popcorn on heat after popping to avoid burning.

  4. 4

In the same pan, add a teaspoon of oil and sauté hing, cumin powder, turmeric, red chilli powder, and salt for 1 minute on low flame.

    1 minute

Sauté spices on low flame to preserve aroma and prevent burning.
