Easy

Besan Ladoo, or बेसन के लड्डू, is one of India's most beloved traditional sweets, celebrated for its melt-in-the-mouth texture and nutty, aromatic flavor. Originating from North India, this festive dessert is made using roasted besan (gram flour), ghee, and jaggery or sugar, then flavored with cardamom and garnished with nuts. Besan Ladoo is a staple during Indian festivals like Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi, often prepared at home and shared with family and friends as a symbol of joy and togetherness. The taste of Besan Ladoo is rich and inviting, with the roasted besan imparting a warm, nutty aroma that is perfectly complemented by the sweetness of jaggery and the fragrance of elaichi (cardamom). The addition of ghee not only enhances the flavor but also gives the ladoo its characteristic softness. It's a versatile sweet, with regional variations across India—some families add khoya for richness or chopped dry fruits for extra nutrition. Besan Ladoo is a great choice for those seeking a wholesome yet indulgent treat, as it’s naturally gluten-free and can be adapted for healthier diets. With its simple ingredients and straightforward preparation, Besan Ladoo is a perfect introduction to Indian mithai, and a delightful way to celebrate India's culinary heritage.

Ingredients(for 2 medium ladoos per serving)

  • 1 cup Besan (gram flour) (finely ground)
  • 1/4 cup Ghee (घी, use homemade for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup Jaggery powder (गुड़, or use powdered sugar)
  • 1/2 tsp Green cardamom powder (इलायची)
  • 6 Almonds (chopped or slivered, badam) - optional
  • 6 Cashews (chopped or slivered, kaju) - optional
  • 8 Raisins (kishmish) - optional
  • 6 Pistachios (chopped, pista) - optional
  • 1 pinch A pinch of salt (enhances sweetness) - optional

Instructions

  1. 1

Heat a heavy-bottomed kadhai or pan on low flame. Add the ghee and let it melt completely.

    2 minutes

Use a thick-bottomed pan to prevent burning the besan.

  2. 2

Add besan to the melted ghee. Stir continuously and roast the besan on low to medium flame until it turns golden-brown and releases a nutty aroma.

    10 minutes

Keep stirring to avoid lumps and ensure even roasting.

  3. 3

Add a pinch of salt (optional) and mix well. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly for 5 minutes.

    5 minutes

Cooling prevents jaggery or sugar from melting and making the mixture too loose.

  4. 4

Once besan mixture is warm (not hot), add jaggery powder and cardamom powder. Mix thoroughly so the sweetener is evenly distributed.

    3 minutes

Mix while still warm for easy binding, but not when hot.

Why This Dish is Healthy

This healthy Besan Ladoo recipe uses jaggery, a natural sweetener, instead of refined sugar, reducing the glycemic load. Roasted gram flour is highly nutritious and filling, making portion control easier. The addition of nuts boosts protein and healthy fat content, supporting sustained energy and satiety. Minimal use of ghee keeps the calories in check while still offering authentic flavor.

Besan Ladoo is rich in plant-based protein and dietary fiber thanks to gram flour (besan). The use of jaggery instead of refined sugar adds minerals such as iron, calcium, and magnesium. Ghee provides healthy fats and supports nutrient absorption. Adding nuts and raisins further increases the vitamin E, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids content. This dessert is naturally gluten-free and can be easily adapted for vegan diets by substituting ghee with coconut oil.

Pro Tips

  • 💡Tip 1: Roast besan on low flame patiently; under-roasting results in raw taste, while over-roasting can burn it.
  • 💡Tip 2: Use fresh, aromatic ghee for the best flavor and texture.
  • 💡Tip 3: For uniform ladoos, use a small ice cream scoop or measure each portion before rolling.

Storage & Serving
