Easy

Steamed Egg Whites, also known as 'Safed Anda Bhap Par', is a light and nutritious Indian dish that combines the simplicity of egg whites with the aromatic flavors of Indian spices. Traditionally, eggs are a significant protein source in Indian households, particularly during breakfast. Steaming the egg whites instead of frying or scrambling them results in a soft, fluffy texture that is easy to digest and naturally low in fat. This method of preparation is not only popular among fitness enthusiasts but is also cherished in many Indian homes for its health benefits and versatility, especially during festivals like Navratri when light, sattvic foods are preferred. The delicate flavors of green chilies, coriander leaves (hara dhania), and a hint of black pepper make this dish both comforting and satisfying. In India, steamed egg whites are often enjoyed with a side of whole wheat toast or as a protein-rich beverage for an energy boost. Its minimal oil usage and customizable spice level make it suitable for all age groups, from children to the elderly. Whether you're looking to add more protein to your diet or searching for a quick and healthy Indian breakfast, this steamed egg whites recipe ticks all the boxes for taste, tradition, and nutrition.

Ingredients(for 1 medium katori (bowl) or 200ml glass)

  • 6 Egg whites (safed anda)
  • 1 Green chili (hari mirch, finely chopped) - optional
  • 2 tbsp Coriander leaves (hara dhania, finely chopped)
  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper powder (kali mirch)
  • to taste Salt (namak)
  • 2 tbsp Onion (pyaz, finely chopped) - optional
  • 2 tbsp Tomato (tamatar, finely chopped) - optional
  • 1/2 tsp Ghee (for greasing) - optional
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds (jeera) - optional
  • 1 cup Water (for steaming)

Instructions

  1. 1

Separate the egg whites from the yolks and transfer them to a mixing bowl. Beat well until slightly frothy using a whisk or fork.

    5 minutes

Ensure no yolk gets into the whites for best texture.

  2. 2

Add finely chopped green chili, coriander leaves, black pepper powder, salt, onion, and tomato to the egg whites. Mix gently to combine.

    5 minutes

For a milder flavor, skip the green chili, especially for kids.

  3. 3

Lightly grease a steel katori or glass bowl with a few drops of ghee. Pour the egg white mixture into the bowl.

    2 minutes

Ghee adds a subtle aroma and helps prevent sticking.

  4. 4

Heat water in an idli steamer, pressure cooker (without weight), or a large pan. Place a stand and set the bowl inside. Cover and steam on medium heat.

    2 minutes

Ensure the water doesn’t reach the bowl to avoid sogginess.
