Prep: 15 min
2 servings
Easy

Jamun Juice, also known as Java Plum or Indian Blackberry juice, is a vibrant and refreshing beverage deeply rooted in Indian culture. This seasonal delight is especially popular during the scorching summer months when fresh jamun (also called 'jambul' or 'kalajamun' in Hindi) floods the local markets. With its striking purple color and tangy-sweet taste, Jamun Juice is not only a feast for the eyes but also a cherished traditional drink enjoyed across India. Jamun has been valued in Ayurveda and Indian households for generations, celebrated for its medicinal properties and cooling effect on the body. Often consumed during festivals like Sharad Purnima and as a part of summer rituals, this juice is a must-have in many North Indian and Maharashtrian homes. Making Jamun Juice at home ensures you enjoy its authentic flavor without artificial additives, keeping the recipe both healthy and pure. Its unique taste profile and health benefits make it ideal for anyone looking to add a nutritious, low-calorie beverage to their diet.

Ingredients(for 1 glass (approx 200 ml))

  • 1 cup (about 150 g) Fresh jamun (Indian blackberry) (jamun/kala jamun)
  • 1 cup Water (filtered)
  • 1/4 tsp Black salt (kala namak)
  • 1/4 tsp Roasted cumin powder (bhuna jeera powder)
  • 1 tsp Lemon juice (nimbu ras)
  • 1 tsp Honey (optional, or use jaggery powder (gud)) - optional
  • 4-5 Mint leaves (pudina, for garnish) - optional
  • as needed Ice cubes (optional) - optional

Instructions

  1. 1

Wash the jamun thoroughly under running water. Pat them dry with a clean cloth.

    2 minutes

Always use fresh, ripe jamun for best flavor and color.

  2. 2

Using your fingers or a small knife, deseed the jamun and collect the pulp in a bowl.

    5 minutes

Deseeding helps reduce bitterness and makes blending easier.

  3. 3

Transfer the jamun pulp to a blender. Add water, black salt, roasted cumin powder, and lemon juice.

    2 minutes

Lemon juice enhances the tangy taste and preserves color.

  4. 4

Blend until smooth. If desired, add honey or jaggery powder for sweetness.

    2 minutes

Do not over-blend, as jamun seeds can make the juice bitter if accidentally blended.
