Easy

Ginger Turmeric Detox Water, known locally as 'Adrak-Haldi ka Pani', is a time-honoured Indian beverage cherished for its healing properties and refreshing taste. Rooted in Ayurveda, this drink harnesses the power of two Indian superfoods: ginger (adrak) and turmeric (haldi), both widely used in Indian households for their medicinal benefits. It is a simple yet powerful concoction often consumed during seasonal changes or after festive indulgences like Diwali or Holi, when the body needs gentle cleansing. The earthy warmth of ginger pairs beautifully with the subtle bitterness and vibrant color of turmeric, creating a soothing beverage that is light on the palate. Traditionally prepared in many Indian homes, especially in North India and the Western Ghats, this detox water is a natural way to support digestive health, boost immunity, and promote overall wellness. Whether sipped warm in the morning or enjoyed chilled, Ginger Turmeric Detox Water is a wonderful addition to any health-conscious Indian’s daily routine. Its simplicity, adaptability, and deep-rooted place in Indian wellness culture make it a beloved choice for people of all ages.

Ingredients(for 1 glass (about 200 ml))

  • 1 inch Fresh ginger root (adrak) (peeled and sliced)
  • 1 inch Fresh turmeric root (haldi) (peeled and sliced; or 1/2 tsp haldi powder)
  • 500 ml Water (filtered)
  • 1 tbsp Lemon juice (nimbu ras) (freshly squeezed)
  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper (kali mirch) (freshly crushed)
  • 1 tsp Honey (shahad) (optional, for sweetness) - optional
  • 4-5 leaves Mint leaves (pudina) (for garnish) - optional
  • a pinch Rock salt (sendha namak) (optional, for taste) - optional

Instructions

  1. 1

Wash and peel the ginger and turmeric roots thoroughly. Slice them thinly for maximum extraction.

    3 minutes

Use gloves when handling fresh turmeric to avoid staining your hands.

  2. 2

In a small saucepan (patila), add 500 ml of filtered water. Add the sliced ginger and turmeric.

    2 minutes

Use a heavy-bottomed patila for better flavor infusion.

  3. 3

Bring the water to a gentle boil on medium flame. Lower the flame and let it simmer for 10-12 minutes.

    12 minutes

Cover the pan partially to reduce evaporation and retain nutrients.

  4. 4

Turn off the flame and add freshly crushed black pepper. Let the mixture steep for another 5 minutes.

    5 minutes

Black pepper enhances the absorption of curcumin from turmeric.
