easy

Coffee with almond milk is a delightful, health-conscious beverage that has gained popularity across India, especially among those seeking a dairy-free or low-calorie alternative to traditional doodh wali coffee. While South India is renowned for its filter coffee (kaapi), the addition of badam doodh (almond milk) adds a unique nutty flavor and creamy texture without the heaviness of regular milk. This drink is perfect for those who are lactose intolerant, vegan, or simply looking to add more plant-based options to their daily routine. In India, coffee culture is vibrant, with chai and coffee being staples in every household. Coffee with almond milk offers a modern twist on the classic, using locally available almonds (badam) to create a wholesome, protein-rich milk. The subtle sweetness from natural sweeteners, combined with the robust aroma of freshly brewed coffee, makes this beverage an excellent pick-me-up during festivals like Diwali or as a comforting drink on a monsoon morning. Its lightness and health benefits make it an attractive option for calorie-conscious individuals, while its taste appeals to both young and old alike.

Ingredients(for 1 cup (approx. 200 ml))

  • 1/2 cup Almonds (badam) (soaked overnight & peeled)
  • 2 cups Water (for blending and adjusting consistency)
  • 2 teaspoons Instant coffee powder (or South Indian filter coffee decoction)
  • 1/2 cup Hot water (for brewing coffee)
  • 2 teaspoons Jaggery powder (gur) or coconut sugar (adjust to taste) - optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cardamom powder (elaichi) (for aroma and flavor) - optional
  • a pinch Cinnamon powder (dalchini) (optional, for warmth) - optional
  • 2-3 drops Vanilla extract (optional, for additional flavor) - optional

Instructions

  1. 1

Soak almonds (badam) overnight or for at least 6 hours. In the morning, peel the skins for a smooth texture.

6-8 hours (soaking), 5 minutes (peeling)

Soaked and peeled almonds blend better, giving creamier almond milk.

  2. 2

Blend the peeled almonds with 2 cups of water in a mixer-grinder until smooth and milky. Strain using a muslin cloth or fine sieve to get fresh almond milk.

    5 minutes

Use a muslin cloth (malmal ka kapda) for best results and a smoother texture.

  3. 3

Heat the almond milk gently in a saucepan (patila) on low flame. Do not boil. Add cardamom powder and cinnamon for extra flavor.

    3 minutes

Stir continuously to prevent almond milk from sticking to the bottom.

  4. 4

In a cup, dissolve instant coffee powder in hot water to make a strong brew. Adjust strength as per preference.

    2 minutes

For authentic South Indian flavor, use filter coffee decoction.
