Chicken Momos, a beloved Indian street snack, have become a staple in the food culture of North-East India, especially in states like Sikkim, West Bengal, and Assam. These succulent steamed dumplings are filled with a flavorful chicken mixture and wrapped in a thin layer of atta (whole wheat flour) dough, offering a delicious blend of juicy protein and aromatic Indian spices. Traditionally enjoyed hot and fresh, momos are often served with a spicy chutney, making them a popular choice at family gatherings and festive occasions such as Losar and Bihu. The taste and texture of Chicken Momos have won the hearts of food lovers across India, transcending regional boundaries. Their appeal lies in their lightness and the balance of flavours—tender chicken, fresh vegetables, and a hint of ginger and garlic. As urban lifestyles become busier, Chicken Momos are cherished as a health-conscious snack or light meal, since they are steamed rather than fried. Their versatility means you can enjoy them at any time of day, making them both a nourishing and satisfying choice for those seeking authentic Indian street food with a healthy twist.

  • to taste Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Refined oil (for greasing)
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh coriander leaves (finely chopped) - optional

Instructions

  1. 1

Prepare the dough by mixing atta and a pinch of salt in a bowl. Gradually add water and knead into a smooth, firm dough. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 10 minutes.

    10 minutes

Use lukewarm water for softer dough.

For the filling, mix minced chicken, chopped onion, ginger-garlic paste, cabbage, carrot, green chilli, black pepper, salt, and coriander leaves in a bowl.

    5 minutes

Squeeze out extra moisture from veggies to avoid soggy filling.

  3. 3

Divide the dough into small balls. Roll each ball into a thin circle (about 3 inches in diameter) using a rolling pin.

    5 minutes

Dust with dry atta to prevent sticking.

  4. 4

Place a spoonful of chicken mixture in the center of each circle. Fold the edges and pleat to seal the momos in a crescent or round shape.

    5 minutes

Seal the edges tightly to prevent filling from leaking.
