How to Make Egg in a Hole Toast (Traditional & Healthy Version)
Egg in a Hole Toast, also known as 'Ande wala Toast', is a delightful and wholesome breakfast option that has found its way into Indian kitchens, especially in urban households seeking quick yet nutritious meals. This dish features a slice of bread with a hole in the center where a fresh egg is cracked and cooked, creating a beautiful, appetizing fusion of soft egg and crispy toast. The Indian version often uses whole wheat 'atta' bread, desi ghee or minimal oil, and is spiced up with green chillies, black pepper, and fresh coriander, making it both flavourful and healthy. Traditionally enjoyed as a breakfast or a light evening snack, Egg in a Hole Toast is a versatile dish that appeals to all age groups. It is particularly popular during exam season, busy mornings, and even as a nourishing after-school treat for children. During festivals like Holi or Diwali, it’s often served as part of a larger breakfast spread, bringing together family members for a hearty start to the day. With its simple preparation and balanced nutrition, this dish is an excellent way to begin your morning on a healthy note, especially for those seeking high-protein vegetarian meals.
Ingredients(for 1 large slice of whole wheat bread with egg)
- 2 large slices Whole wheat bread (atta bread preferred for health)
- 2 Eggs (fresh, free-range if possible)
- 2 tsp Desi ghee or olive oil (for toasting, use ghee for traditional flavour)
- 2 tbsp, finely chopped Fresh coriander (dhaniya patta)
- 1 small, finely chopped Green chilli (hari mirch, adjust to taste) - optional
- 1/4 tsp Black pepper powder (kali mirch)
- to taste Salt (namak)
- 2 tbsp, finely chopped Onion (optional, pyaz) - optional
- 2 tbsp, finely chopped Tomato (tamatar, optional) - optional
- 1 tbsp, grated Low-fat cheese (optional, for extra protein) - optional
Instructions
- 1
Place the whole wheat bread slices on a clean surface. Use a small bowl or a katori to cut a hole (about 2-inch diameter) in the center of each slice. Keep the cut-out pieces aside.
3 minutes
Use a sharp-edged katori for a neat hole.
- 2
Heat 1 tsp desi ghee or olive oil on a tawa (griddle) over medium flame. Place the bread slices on the tawa and lightly toast one side for 1-2 minutes.
4 minutes
Toasting brings out a nutty aroma; do not burn the bread.
- 3
Flip the slices. Carefully crack an egg into the hole of each bread slice. Sprinkle salt, black pepper, chopped green chilli, onion, tomato, and coriander over the egg.
3 minutes
Crack the egg gently to avoid spilling.
- 4
Cover the tawa with a lid and cook on low flame for 4-5 minutes until the egg white is set but yolk remains slightly runny. For a firmer yolk, cook a little longer.
6 minutes
Covering helps cook the egg evenly and keeps it soft.
Why This Dish is Healthy
This recipe is a healthy breakfast choice because it uses whole wheat bread ('atta' bread) for sustained energy release, fresh eggs for muscle-building protein, and minimal fat for heart health. The use of fresh vegetables enhances its fiber and micronutrient content. Unlike deep-fried or heavily processed breakfasts, this dish is light, easy to digest, and helps maintain stable blood sugar levels, making it suitable for weight management and diabetic diets.
Egg in a Hole Toast is a nutrient-dense breakfast that provides high-quality protein from eggs, complex carbohydrates and dietary fiber from whole wheat bread, and essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin B12, iron, and selenium. The inclusion of onions, tomatoes, and coriander boosts antioxidant content and adds vitamin C and K. Using minimal ghee or olive oil keeps saturated fat low, while the optional cheese adds calcium and additional protein. This dish supports muscle health, energy levels, and keeps you feeling full longer.
